Planning for Roadways and Bridges

(Adapted from PennDOT’s Transportation and Land Use Toolkit)

The core of the Mon Valley’s transportation system is a network of highways, roadways and bridges. These facilities are important components of the Mon Valley’s overall quality of life and economic potential, providing mobility and accessibility to local and interregional users. They also serve as key intermodal connections to other travel modes. The effect of roadways, highways and bridges on land use and economic development has long been recognized. Since municipal governments operate in a world of limited natural and financial resources, the planning of transportation facilities and services should be driven by smart land use and economic development policy.
