State Route 837 Improvements
State Route 837 follows the south shore of the Monongahela River, closely parallel to the Norfolk Southern railroad line. Route 837 is a key connector between communities in the lower Valley, and some sections of the road serve a commuter function. In 1987, planners recommended that Route 837 be widened and improved. The Mon Valley Economic Development Strategy recommended that it be improved between the Homestead High Level Bridge and the Clairton Bridge. The Citizens’ Plan called for improving Route 837 between the Birmingham Bridge and Clairton by widening the road in places, improving intersections and signalization, and rerouting a section through the Waterfront in Homestead.

Repairs to bridges connecting to Route 837, including Clairton/Glassport, Mansfield, Mifflin, Birmingham, Rankin and Homestead High Level bridges, are listed on the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission’s 2009-2012 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). Intersection improvement at the McKeesport/Duquesne Bridge is also listed on the TIP.
To promote Route 837 improvements, communities should build local interest in the project and collaboratively pursue funding to study the concept in greater detail. Work with Allegheny County Economic Development and contact SPC Commissioners for Allegheny County.
