State Route 885 and Associated Improvements
State Route 885 follows the north shore of the Monongahela River through Pittsburgh, crosses the river at the Glenwood Bridge and then bypasses a bend in the river to connect to Clairton. Mifflin Road branches off Route 885, leading to the Pittsburgh-McKeesport Boulevard, Richland Avenue and the Mansfield (Dravosburg) Bridge. This “Y” shaped connector, linked by Lebanon Church and Buttermilk Hollow Roads, is a major commuter route between Downtown Pittsburgh and Mon Valley communities. The Mon Valley Economic Development Strategy, Citizens’ Plan, Mon Valley Commission Report and Strategy 21 Plan all call for the section of 885 between Mifflin Road and Lebanon Church Road to be improved. The Mon Valley Strategy calls for improved connections to the Dravosburg Bridge, while the Citizens’ Plan calls for improved connections to Pittsburgh.

State Route 885 and associated roadway improvements are not currently listed on the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), and are not scheduled for implementation. Rehabilitation to the Mansfield (Dravosburg) Bridge, the Mifflin Road Bridge, and the Glenwood Bridge and connecting ramps are indicated on the TIP.
To promote improvements on State Route 885 and associated roadways, communities should build local interest in the project and collaboratively pursue funding to further study the concept. Work with Allegheny County Economic Development and contact Allegheny County SPC Commissioners.
