State Route 148 and Associated Improvements

State Route 148 connects McKeesport to East McKeesport via North Versailles. State Route 148 is a major connector between the Mon Valley and U.S. Route 30, which leads to Interstate 376. Beyond its official state route designation, the road extends in either direction as 5th Ave and West 5th Avenue, connecting to Wilmerding and Glassport. The Mon Valley Economic Development Strategy recommends that 148 be improved between U.S. Route 30 and the Dravosburg Bridge, including West 5th Avenue. The Citizens’ Plan calls for road improvements and signal upgrades for the same section of 148. The Strategy 21 Plan and Mon Valley Commission Report call for improvements to similar sections of 148.

State Route 148 and associated roadway improvements are not currently listed on the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), and are not scheduled for implementation. Rehabilitation to the Mansfield (Dravosburg) Bridge, replacement of the Port Vue Bridge, and intersection improvements at the McKeesport/Duquesne Bridge are scheduled on the TIP.

To promote improvements on State Route 148 and associated roadways, communities should build local interest in the project and collaboratively pursue funding to study the concept. Work with Allegheny County Economic Development and contact SPC Commissioners for Allegheny County.
