Proposed New Trails

Trails for recreational and commuter use are an important part of a balanced transportation system. Building on the existing regional trail system, sections of the proposed new trails will eventually provide uninterrupted passage from downtown Pittsburgh along the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers to Washington D.C. Examples throughout the United States demonstrate that trail investment is attractive to businesses and individuals seeking a high quality of life. Trails can also help to reduce traffic congestion in urban and suburban areas.

Commuter and recreational trails are being developed throughout the Mon Valley, along riverfronts, railway corridors and even streets and roads when necessary. Several segments remain to be completed largely because access agreements need to be worked out with private property owners.

To support trail expansion efforts in the Mon Valley, contact the Steel Valley Trail Council. You may also contact the SPC Commissioners for Allegheny County.

Other organizations involved in regional trail development include: the Allegheny Trail Alliance, the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, the Port of Pittsburgh, Friends of the Riverfront, Riverlife Task Force, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Steel Industry Heritage Corp., PennDOT, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Regional Trails Corporation, Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh.
