Proposed Mon/Fayette Expressway: I-376 to State Route 51

The Mon/Fayette system, a tolled extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, is proposed to extend approximately 70 miles south from Pittsburgh through the Monongahela River Valley and western Fayette County to Interstate 68 near Morgantown, WV. The proposed section connecting Route 51 and I-376 would provide expressway access to redevelopment sites in economically depressed Mon River towns, and – by connecting with the Mon/Fayette sections to the south – open “greenfield” sites beside new interchanges and exits. It would also provide an alternate travel option for inter-regional through traffic, particularly commercial vehicles that now use existing north-south arteries such as State Routes 51, 88, 837 and 857, as well as U.S. Route 40 (the National Road). Plans also exist for a Southern Beltway, intended to link the Mon-Fayette to Pennsylvania Route 60 and the new Pittsburgh International Airport.

The Mon/Fayette Expressway connection between Route 51 and I-376 is now on the SPC’s Illustrative Project List. If revenue is identified to complete the project, it will be reviewed for its consistency with the Long Range Plan, and be considered for addition to an amended TIP.  The design phase of the Southern Beltway appears on the TIP, as does construction of a Mon/Fayette Expressway extension from Brownsville to Uniontown. Both projects currently do not have sufficient funding to be completed, but may recieve more funding as part of the Long Range Plan.

Those interested in promoting the Mon/Fayette Expressway project should contact SPC County Commissioners. They may also contact The Mon Valley Progress Council, an organization that has advocated for the Mon/Fayette Expressway since 1965.
