Light Rail - Spine Line to Homestead
The Eastern Corridor Transit Study proposes a new light rail line connecting downtown Pittsburgh, Oakland and the Mon Valley. The Spine Line begins in downtown Pittsburgh at the Steel Plaza Subway Station and travels along Centre and Fifth Avenues. The alignment then extends through Oakland to the CSX Railroad right-of-way near Neville Street, then south on the CSX Railroad right-of-way through Oakland and Hazelwood to Homestead. The alignment of this project is subject to further refinement in the planning process.

The Spine Line connecting downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland is on the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission’s Illustrative Project List. If revenue is identified to complete the project, it will be reviewed and considered for an amended Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). However, it is currently not scheduled for implementation as funding is not available. The Spine Line could eventually be extended to Homestead and the Mon Valley. Light rail beyond Oakland is not listed on the current TIP or mentioned in the Long Range Plan.
Those interested in promoting the development of light rail transit in the Mon Valley should build community interest in the project. Work with the Port Authority of Allegheny County and contact the Allegheny County SPC Commissioners.
