Commuter Rail - Pittsburgh to Greensburg
The Eastern Corridor Transit Study proposes that the Norfolk Southern/U.S. Route 30 Commuter Rail begin in downtown Pittsburgh and travel along the Norfolk Southern Railroad right-of-way parallel to the East Busway through Wilkinsburg, Braddock, North Huntington, Irwin and Jeannette to Greensburg. It would provide a rapid transit option from Greensburg to Pittsburgh, connecting activity centers, utilizing an existing transportation right-of-way, and relieving some congestion on U.S. Route 30.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County and the Westmoreland County Transit Authority are continuing to study the feasibility of this proposal. The downtown Pittsburgh to Greensburg Commuter Rail project is included on the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission’s Illustrative Project List. However, the project is not currently scheduled for implementation. If revenue is identified to complete the project, the project may be reviewed and considered for addition to an amended Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). Currently, WCTA is conducting a follow-up study for a Latrobe to Pittsburgh commuter rail on the Norfolk Southern line.
Those interested in promoting the development of a commuter rail line from downtown Pittsburgh to Greensburg should build community interest in the project. Work with the Westmoreland County Transit Authority and contact SPC Commissioners.
