Targeted Site Redevelopment
Industrial brownfield sites in the Pittsburgh area, such as Washington’s Landing, SouthSide Works, the Pittsburgh Technology Center and the Waterfront in Homestead, have been successfully transformed into sites for new development.
In the Mon Valley, the Carrie Furnace (in Rankin and Swissvale) and Hazelwood LTV sites (in Pittsburgh), which are both located on the Monongahela Riverfront, are being planned for redevelopment; and tenants are actively being sought for brownfield redevelopment sites in McKeesport and Duquesne. Brownfield redevelopment requires significant financial investment in environmental cleanup and infrastructure improvements. It also involves altering land use designations and site access patterns.
