How to Use this Website
The Mon Valley Land Use and Transportation Web Resource is not just another study. It’s part encyclopedia, part how-to manual, part road map. Most importantly, it’s yours – and the future of transportation and land use planning in the Monongahela River Valley is in your hands.

The information and planning tools you will find here are intended to support and encourage planning and advocacy by community development organizations, elected officials, administrators and residents in the lower Mon Valley. We hope you will use this as a resource as you work together to secure long-needed transportation investments and healthy economic development.
This website consists of four main parts:
Process briefly explains how land use, transportation and economic development planning are interrelated and describes recent efforts by federal, state and regional agencies to integrate land use and transportation planning. It also describes the organizations and processes through which transportation projects are planned and programmed in southwestern Pennsylvania, and outlines two important ways that local municipalities, community leaders and the general public can influence regional transportation and economic development priorities. You can also find a map of current transportation improvements that have been programmed for the Mon Valley study area.
In Projects, for each major transportation proposal we provide a written narrative and illustrative map describing its physical scope and impact, its current status, anticipated costs, and suggested next steps for the project’s advancement.
The Past Studies portion of the website identifies and briefly summarizes planning studies from the past decade that include recommendations for the Mon Valley. The studies’ geographic focus areas range from the ten-county southwestern Pennsylvania region to the Mon Valley sub-region, to the targeted redevelopment of specific brownfield sites. A selection of major transportation recommendations from these past studies, including proposals for improving existing roads, building new roads, and expanding transit and trail systems, is also highlighted.
Resources provides an overview of basic land use planning tools and funding resources available to Mon Valley communities. It also recommends planning and funding resources specific to each of the following transportation modes: roadways and bridges, transit, bicyclists and pedestrians, and freight movement. Additional planning resources are provided to support improvements to sewer and water infrastructure, the conservation of open space and recreation areas, and community and economic development. It also suggests organizations that may provide technical support and assistance to Mon Valley communities pursuing planning efforts.
